The 49th annual CMA awards were live from Nashville on November 4th. The talent filled show included many surprises and collaborations.
The show included your typical vocal performances from some of the most popular country music artists including Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, and Brad Paisley.
The most notable performance of the night was a duet between pop sensation Justin Timberlake and “one of Nashville’s most revered craftsmen”, Chris Stapleton. They performed “Tennessee Whiskey”, which Stapleton covered on his album and Timberlake’s “Drink You Away”. This performance was one for the ages, in fact it is still managing to blow up all social media outlets even hours after the event. We can only hope that these two will blow us away in the near future on a “CMT Crossroads”, please I’m begging you.
Brad Paisley played it cool and only made one subtle blow towards Blake and Miranda’s divorce. Let’s face it these awards were quite awkward for the two. Luckily Blake has the support of his new girlfriend Gwen Stefani to help cheer him up for coming away empty handed. Miranda on the other hand slayed her emotional performance of “Bathroom Sink”, and reminded us why she deserved to be the CMA Female Vocalist of the Year. We did it! We all survived the first awards show post-divorce.
The man of the night, Chris Stapleton, took the country community by storm, and rightfully so. Many viewers at home were in shock. Who is this man winning all of these awards? Chris Stapleton may not be a household name quite yet, but he will be. The talent that this man possesses is astonishing. He is Nashville’s best kept secret. It is about time the world is introduced to Chris Stapleton the artist with the amazing voice, and not just the man who has penned a string of hits for numerous artists. Stapleton came away with 3 awards; New artist of the year, album of the year, and male vocalist of the year. Stapleton said backstage, “It’s surreal, very unbelievable …I feel very loved.” Onstage he said, “I’ve been in the music business for a while, but I’ve never done anything like this. It’s a little overwhelming, but I’m going to do my best to handle it with some degree of grace.” Congratulations Chris, your time to shine has arrived. If you haven’t already be sure to check out his debut album “Traveller”, it is one you can’t afford to miss.
The final award of the night, Entertainer of the Year, went to none other than Luke Bryan. I am somewhat shocked that Garth Brooks did not clinch this award with his incredible comeback tour, but the CMA’s have spoken. Bryan is one of the greatest entertainers in country music and he is deserving of this award. Selling out numerous arenas and stadiums across the country it is clear this man is in high demand. If you were lucky enough to see him live this year, it is very clear as to why he was chosen as the EOTY.
